Paderewski’s Gift – Permanent Exhibition
The exhibition presents more than 220 works of art and memorabilia connected to one of the greatest Polish musicians and statesmen of the 20th century, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. The objects tell the story of his life, a life filled with diverse interests and travels to various corners of the world. The most significant state decorations and medals show him as an eminent politician who was involved in efforts to regain Poland's independence. Musical instruments, including a Steinway & Sons piano, commemorative batons and trophies with dedications from symphony orchestras across the globe remind us of Paderewski's musical genius. A valuable collection of porcelain from China and Japan, worn-out travel trunks and a set of decorative souvenir spoons are mementos of his many journeys.
The objects presented at the exhibition are a bequest from Paderewski’s will, in which he promised them to the National Museum in Warsaw in 1930. This gift, a selection of which can be seen at the Museum of Interiors in Otwock Wielki, was, apart from its material and historical value, a testament to Paderewski's unwavering patriotism. On 23rd September 1940, in his last radio address before leaving Switzerland for the United States, Paderewski said: "I sacrificed my life for my homeland. I served it with all my heart and all my strength (...)”.
